When we hear about hypnotism, immediately ideas come and tell something like mystery, creepy things and weird entertainment. Also an image may come about hypnotism is something like a weird incident on TV shows or news that a hypnotized person intended to kill someone. That would be our misconception about hypnosis. Whether hypnosis is a risk method or not would not be discussed in this writing. What would be concerned here is how we can develop ourselves and try to learn more through studying hypnosis. Being open-minded to hypnosis rather than only picking up those negative hearsays as our notion is always beneficial.
In the following, I will point out
an experience of Milton Erickson as if this would happen anywhere anytime. Perhaps, it depends on whether you want
to make it your own way
in your daily life. It happened
in an airport when Erickson was waiting for his flight on a bench. A young lady with her two year old girl came
and found their place near to Erickson. He had an entire scene of what was happening on the mother and her little girl by watching those subtleties in
their human nature.
As
everyone is when traveling
around by plane, the mother was tired and had her paper to read. The toddle seemed impatient in the waiting
room and she started playing
on the bench. When the little girl
noticed a toy display, which is not
far away, she looked at her mother who was reading newspaper and turned back to look at the toy display. She spent some time to look at the toy exhibition and went back to see whether her mother was paying any attention and then jumped up and
down. The mother was impatient with her
girl and told her to calm down. The girl
got down to the floor and ran
back and forth. The mother did things like a normal mother
does to make the child behave,
like bringing the child back
by holding her and commanding her to go to sleep. The child seemed to listen to her mother. However, after a little while, she started to jump up and down again. She stared at
the toy counter and turned back to see her mother again and jumped again and again, on and on.
“Finally
Mother said, ‘If you want to some exercise, I’ll give it to you!’” (Erickson,
1983). Then the two year old had a walk with her mom and accidentally they
stopped at where the toy display was.
The mother said “‘Maybe there is something here that will make you
behave’”. The toddle got what she’d wanted, eventually.
There
were a few things going on here in the Erickson’s case. They are the observation (the first thing); without that you will not have any thought about how our subconscious
works. The innate
ability of making someone else to do its favor like Erickson mentioned if the child asked “’I want that toy; the Mother often say no.’” Thus, the subconscious (the second thing
being watched) did all things for the child.
The only two year old girl did not plan the whole tactic; moving back
and forth to look at the toy counter and her mother who might have sensed
something going on, jumping up and down and running around that made all
annoying behavior, subtly and accidentally stopping at the toy counter to let
her mom to do something. Erickson
pointed out for the child “…maybe the best thing to do is to annoy her and give
her a chance to quiet me down” (Erickson, 1983, p. 65).
